Standing on Brighton railway station the other day I noticed an Automatic External Defibrillator attached to the wall. I wondered how many people have had a heart attack on Brighton station in the past 10 years. Selling AEDs is big business - Google 'Buy AED' and you'll see just how big. The economics of AED use are debatable given how often they are likely to be used. But they only cost £1000 and buy peace of mind.
Here is a splendidly trenchant article which goes even further than I would in questioning what we do, and here is the article which started it all. AEDs in casinos - good; AEDs all over the place in all sorts of public venues to make us feel we are doing something - bad.
